Weekends with little ones don't have to cost a fortune. If you're looking for free and low-cost things to do near Telford with kids, here are our actual favourites, the ones we go back to, not just the obvious ones.

🌳 1. Apley Woods, Wellington (Free)

The Duck Pond at Apley is always a hit!

A peaceful woodland with a duck pond, carved sculptures, and pushchair-friendly paths that never gets old. Our daughter's idea of a perfect morning is a nature bag and absolutely no agenda.

🛝 2. Dale End Park, Ironbridge (Free)

Tucked just a short walk from the Iron Bridge, this is a hidden gem even regular Ironbridge visitors miss. A brand new £94,000 playground opened in November 2024 with a bespoke climbing frame inspired by the Iron Bridge itself and a wooden steam train that toddlers absolutely love. Stunning riverside setting, picnic benches, and easy to combine with a wander along the gorge.

Tip: parking can be tight on busy days. Arrive early or walk in from town.

📍 Dale End, Ironbridge, Telford TF8

💷 Free entry | Parking: nearby, charges may apply

🐕 Dog friendly | 🚼 Pushchair friendly

🌾 3. Granville Country Park (Free)

Wilder and more adventurous than your average park, with woodland trails, hidden industrial history from the old colliery, and brilliant wildlife spotting. We love it for a proper picnic and a good explore. Not all paths are pushchair friendly but the main routes are manageable.

💷 Free | Parking: Free at various access points

💜We never leave home without a decent picnic blanket. This one has survived two years of muddy Telford parks: Our favourite picnic blanket

🏛️ 4. Lilleshall Monument (Free)

You've driven past it a hundred times. Have you actually been up close? A short steep walk from the school car park brings you to a 70-foot stone obelisk built in 1833 with panoramic views across the whole of Shropshire, the Welsh hills, the Wrekin, Wenlock Edge, all of it. Toddlers think the monument is enormous. Dogs love the hill. Parents love the view.

Tip: park near the primary school and walk up. The road to the top is very narrow and not suitable for passing.

📍 Lilleshall, between Telford and Newport

💷 Free | Parking: Free near primary school

🐕 Dog friendly

⛪ 5. Buildwas Abbey (Nearly Free, £2 parking)

Ancient abbey ruins run by English Heritage with a genuinely beautiful atmosphere that costs nothing once you've parked. It's short with a toddler, so honestly don't plan your whole day around it. Combined with a picnic and a gentle explore it made for a really lovely couple of hours. The ruins are atmospheric, the grounds are peaceful, and two pounds for parking is about as cheap as a day out gets.

🌉 Tip: combine it with an ice cream looking out from the Ironbridge.

📍 Buildwas, Telford TF8

💷 £2 parking | English Heritage members free

🐕 Dog friendly

🌿 6. Victoria Park, Newport (Free)

A little further out but worth knowing about. Free outdoor gym equipment, free table tennis (bring your own bats and balls), a play area for mixed ages, a community orchard, and beautiful walks along the old disused canal towpath. One of those parks that has far more going on than it looks.

Tip: public toilets are in Newport town centre nearby rather than in the park itself.

📍 Victoria Park, Newport, Telford TF10

💷 Free | Parking: Free on site

🐕 Dog friendly | 🚼 Pushchair friendly along canal path

🐑 7. Frankly Farm Tours (Low Cost, Adults £5.30, Kids Free)

Not free but close enough to make this list and genuinely one of the best value days out near Telford. Baby lambs, friendly goats, a brilliant toddler play area, and Jeffrey the llama who will absolutely inspect your buggy because he is convinced you are holding out on him. We visited recently and our daughter didn't want to leave.

Tip: booking recommended, especially in spring during lambing season.

💷 Adults £5.30 | Children under 12 FREE
