Telford has been waiting for something like this.
Brick and Beyond, the town's first LEGO café, opened its doors today at The Quad on Ironmasters Way and from the moment you walk in, you understand immediately why the owners have been counting down to this for months.
Coffee, cake, LEGO, and absolutely no reason to look at your phone. It's a genuinely brilliant idea and Telford is lucky to have it.
🧱 How It Works
The model is simple and clever. You hire a table by the hour, choose a LEGO kit from their collection of over 100 sets, and build. That's it.
What makes it work is the attitude behind it. Deep into a build and need another ten minutes? They'll give it to you. Want to stay longer? They'll check availability and make it happen. This isn't a place that watches the clock, it's a place that watches the builds.
A QR-based system lets you scan and instantly see which kits are available, which are in use, and what's ready to go. Once you choose a set the barcode is scanned and the system updates automatically. For a busy family café on opening day, it ran beautifully.
🚗 The Set That Nearly Didn't Make It
Every LEGO enthusiast has that one set they almost can't bring themselves to share. For Brick and Beyond it was the McLaren. It came very close to staying at home.
A few sets did stay home for now, including the Disney Castle, a 16 hour build that will eventually go on display once the café moves into its permanent long-term home. When it does, it will be worth going just to see that.
The team were actually recognised in the LEGO Store in London while picking up last-minute sets for opening day. When strangers in a LEGO shop in London know who you are before you've even opened, you're probably doing something right.
🍽️ The Food
The menu has its own star and it isn't LEGO shaped. Stud Stacks are a Brick and Beyond original, currently in the process of being trademarked, and already shaping up to be the signature item. We're not going to spoil what they are, you need to go and find out for yourself.
😅 What Kept Them Up at Night
The team were honest about the nerves in the run up to opening. What if the systems don't work? What if customers don't get the experience they've dreamed of delivering?
Their biggest worry on the day itself was simple and completely relatable. What happens when someone wants a kit that's already in use?
The QR system was their answer. And on day one, it worked.

This is not a pop-up. Brick and Beyond is already settling into their permanent home in Oakengates with a clear vision to expand into Shrewsbury, Stafford, and Wolverhampton.
